Monte Generoso Train: A Swiss Alps Day Trip from Lugano

Just writing this post makes me want to return to Monte Generoso! Our visit was so much fun that it tops our list of favorite things to do in Ticino, Switzerland. We went in the final days of December while staying in Lugano. My uncle suggested a day trip here, and I wasn’t really sure what to expect—but now that I’ve been, I know I’ll be back.

Oldest Operating Steam Train in Switzerland takes you to the top of Monte Generoso!

When my uncle suggested this day trip, he gave us two options: Monte Generoso or Monte San Salvatore. It was a tough choice, especially since I didn’t know much about either. He leaned toward Monte Generoso, even though it was a bit more expensive, because he loves trains—and it’s home to Switzerland’s oldest cogwheel train, which takes visitors to the top. The Monte Generoso Railway began operations in 1890 and features the oldest steam locomotive still running in Switzerland today.

I also thought Monte Generoso might have a more gradual incline, whereas Monte San Salvatore is served by a funicular that goes straight up—and Gary isn’t a fan of heights.

How to get to Monte Generoso from Lugano

On this two-week vacation, we relied entirely on public transportation—and getting from Lugano to the Monte Generoso cogwheel train was no problem. Our accommodation in Lugano included a free Ticino Ticket, which allowed us to take the regional train from Lugano to Capolago for free.

At Capolago, we transferred from the Swiss railway station (SBB) to the Monte Generoso railway station, just a one-minute walk away. The Ticino Ticket also gave us a 30% discount on the Monte Generoso railway ticket. My uncle pre-purchased his in advance using the SBB app (www.sbb.ch), but we bought ours on-site—and the best deal turned out to be a family ticket. (Tip: Always research discounts before purchasing!)

With our tickets in hand, we lined up. The train was first come, first served, and it was very full by the time we left. We were glad we all got seats!

Things to do and see at Monte Generoso

There’s so much to see and do here—it’s easily a full-day experience. But if you want to extend your visit, there’s even summer camping available for a multi-day adventure.

Definitely take the train, or hike, to the top. While you can get off at other stations, the top is the reason to come here.

My son was disappointed when we left—he had spotted several hiking trails he still wanted to explore. And I don’t blame him! The hikes here are fantastic, rewarding you with once-in-a-lifetime panoramic views. No wonder he didn’t want to leave! We could even see Milan, Italy peaking through the cloud cover in the distance.

Beyond hiking, you can also mountain bike or even paraglide from Monte Generoso. If you visit in late spring or summer, you might be lucky enough to spot the Wild Bisbino horses grazing. These beautiful horses live on the mountain year-round but come down to lower elevations for the winter.

Photo Above: I was instantly intrigued by the architecture of the large, round structure at the top of the mountain—it felt almost alien, like something from another planet. My uncle explained that this striking building was actually designed by renowned Swiss architect Mario Botta. Inside, you’ll find two restaurants and restrooms—handy if you’re looking for one!

A Stunning Day Trip from Lugano to Monte Generoso

Video: Monte Generoso is a must-visit if you’re in Ticino, Switzerland! Whether you’re a train lover, hiker, or just looking for the best Swiss Alps views, this day trip from Lugano is one for the books. This video gives you a good idea of what you will see and what the hike is like. I show the trail in several places, as well as the views you get from each lookout.

Peaceful Swiss Alps Snooze (w/ views)

One of my favorite photos I snapped was of someone asleep on the mountainside. I almost didn’t notice him lying there! But honestly, he had the right idea. The next time life leaves me feeling frazzled, I’ll channel this moment—imagining myself right here, stretched out in the grass, soaking in the stillness.

I’m not the first to be inspired by this place. Monte Generoso has captivated artists, including Edward Lear, whose painting The Plains of Lombardy from Monte Generoso is displayed at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.

If you’re making your way through Switzerland on the Grand Tour, Monte Generoso is yet another reason to stop and explore.

The Grand Tour of Switzerland is an epic 1,643-kilometer (1,021-mile) road trip, showcasing the country’s most breathtaking landscapes, cultural landmarks, and scenic routes. Launched in 2015 by Switzerland Tourism and the Grand Tour of Switzerland Association, it features 83 designated photo spots, guiding travelers to some of the most picturesque locations in the country. Naturally, there’s one here!

The entire circuit takes about seven days to complete—and you bet it’s on my list. So I know I’ll be seeing Monte Generoso again!

Where to eat atop Monte Generoso?

In case you’re wondering, Migros’ connection to Monte Generoso goes back to 1941. That year, the founder of the Swiss retail company Migros purchased the Monte Generoso Railway to prevent its dismantling during World War II, ensuring its continued operation. So, sure enough, Migros operates restaurants even at this altitude!

The Self-Service Generoso offers reasonable prices—affordable by Swiss standards and especially considering the incredible views from your table. We had bratwurst and the meal of the day, with a choice of buffet-style sides. There was plenty of food, and yes, even wine by the glass.

The Fiore di Pietra complex offers two dining options:

  • Restaurant Fiore di Pietra — A refined dining experience with panoramic views. It was closed for the winter when we visited, but if you plan to go, you might want to make a reservation.
  • Self-Service Generoso – A casual dining option with a variety of dishes and access to a panoramic terrace. This is where we had lunch during our visit.

Additionally, at the Bellavista intermediate station, there’s Buffet Bellavista, a cozy grotto-style restaurant serving regional cuisine.

Of course, I also saw plenty of people enjoying picnics they had packed along—a great option if you want to soak in the views while dining al fresco!

Plan Your Visit to Monte Generoso

If you are planning your own visit, be sure to check the timetable as the train does not always run daily and you’ll want to be sure you time your arrival with the mountain railway timetable. If you plan to camp or eat at the full dining restaurant at the top, be sure to make your reservations in advance as this mountain was busy, even in the middle of winter.
